Maria Montessori's schools soon became popular in the United States, between 1910 and 1920. However, interest in her approach soon faded. This happened most often because of her unwillingness to accept new ideas and key elements of American philosophy. One of the major aspects she would not compromise on was play, which American schools highly value. However, in the 1950's Montessori rose again. In the beginning of American Montessori schools, the children served were from well to do families. In recent years, more charter and magnet schools have included the Montessori approach.
